Houston Strong: Facing Winter Challenges Together and Building Brighter Futures

As Houstonians, we know our city is full of heart. From the energy of our diverse neighborhoods to the resilience we’ve shown through storms, heatwaves, and economic ups and downs, Houston comes together when it matters most. Right now, as colder weather settles in across the region, that spirit is more important than ever.

Local organizations are sounding the alarm about the impending freeze: nonprofits like Star of Hope, Together 4 Texas, and others are urgently collecting coats, blankets, and supplies to protect people experiencing homelessness. With temperatures dropping, the need for warm clothing, hot meals, and safe shelter spikes. At the same time, broader reports from the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County show that while our region has made incredible progress, reducing homelessness by over 60% since 2011, recent counts indicate around 3,300 people still face homelessness, with unsheltered numbers ticking up slightly amid funding uncertainties and rising living costs.

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue too. Studies from the Kinder Institute highlight that roughly two in five households in Houston and Harris County struggle with consistent access to nutritious food, often linked to higher health challenges and economic pressures. These realities affect families, individuals, and entire communities right here in our backyard, from Gulfton and Sharpstown to East Downtown and beyond.

This is where community-driven efforts like The Polish Way step in. As a Houston-based nonprofit, we’re committed to meeting people where they are with practical, compassionate support:

  • Food Drives that deliver groceries and meals to low-income families and those without stable housing, helping ease the burden during tough months like winter.
  • Clothing Assistance providing clean, seasonal items, coats, blankets, and everyday essentials, to restore dignity and protect against the cold.
  • Therapy Services offering free or low-cost mental health counseling to address the trauma and stress that often accompany hardship.
  • Housing Support guiding families toward stable rentals and even building affordable homes, creating pathways out of crisis toward long-term security.

We’re proud to be part of Houston’s larger network of partners working toward solutions. Mayor Whitmire’s ambitious push to end street homelessness, backed by initiatives like the $70 million pilot program and new facilities opening in areas like East Downtown, shows what’s possible when we collaborate. Organizations across the city, from the Coalition for the Homeless to local missions, are uniting to turn progress into permanence.

But we can’t do it alone. Every donation of food, clothing, or funds helps us reach more neighbors in need. Every volunteer hour at a drive or event makes a direct difference. And every shared story builds awareness in our community.

Houston has always been a city that polishes rough edges into something stronger and brighter. This winter, let’s keep that momentum going. If you’re able, consider joining us, donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word. Together, we can ensure no one faces the cold, hunger, or uncertainty alone.

Stay warm, stay connected, and let’s keep Houston strong.

With gratitude, The Polish Way Team in Houston, TX
